Persil was created by German-based Henkel in 1907, when chemists developed an detergent that released oxygen. This stain-fighting power eliminated some of the strenuous scrubbing that was required in the pre-washing machine era. By the 1970s, Persil was sold all over Europe and has since expanded globally.
