The first Hoover vacuum was invented in 1907 by Murray Spangler of North Canton, Ohio. An inventor and janitor, Spangler suffered from asthma and looked for a way to minimize irritating dust. Using a fan, fabric and broom handle, he created a rudimentary sweeper with suction. W.H. Hoover bought the patent from Spangler in 1908 and began assembling sweepers in his leather goods shop.

More than 100 years later, Hoover remains a leader in the floor care industry, with a comprehensive line of vacuum products. Now a part of TTI Floor Care North America, this global company is headquartered in Charlotte, NC.
