The first Dixie paper cup was created in the early 1900s with the purpose of reducing germ spread at public drinking fountains. The demand for disposable cups grew during the 1918 flu pandemic, and by the 1920s Dixie paper cups were being packaged and sold for home use. Since then, the Dixie brand has grown to include paper plates, paper bowls, napkins, plastic utensils and food storage containers.
