Choosing the Correct Classroom Chair Height

A simple guide to matching seat heights to grade levels — so every student sits comfortably and stays focused.

Thinking about replacing your classroom chairs? The process can become overwhelming once you realize how many seat heights are available. Kids grow at different rates and the optimal chair height can vary greatly even within the same grade level. So where do you start?

Now you can determine if your existing chairs are the correct size for your grade level. The breakdown of school chair seat heights is generally 10″ for toddlers, 12″ for preschool–kindergarten, 14″ for kindergarten–third grade, 16″ for fourth–sixth, and 18″ for middle school, high school, and college students. Some teachers opt to have more than one size available in their classroom. For example, a fifth-grade classroom could have a 50/50 split of 16″ and 18″ chairs.

To find the best seat height for an individual student, simply measure the distance from the floor to the back of the child's knee. Students' feet should comfortably touch the ground while seated. Try to avoid seating a child in a chair that's too big or small — it can make kids uncomfortable and interfere with their concentration. Here's a closer look at seat-height essentials for each grade level:

Daycare & Preschool

Some manufacturers offer chairs with a seat height of 10″ or less. These chairs are generally designed for toddlers 12 months to two years of age. It's important to remember that very young children won't sit still for very long and tend to outgrow these small chairs quickly. Save this size for childcare infant and toddler rooms.

For preschool classrooms and daycare facilities with children ages three and four, opt for a 12″ seat height.

Kindergarten

Many children experience a growth spurt in kindergarten. A 12″ seat height will be fine for most, but a few students will be more comfortable in a 14″ chair. There are some 13½″ school chairs available that would be a good compromise.

First – Third Grade

The majority of first and second graders will fit a 14″ school chair. As they enter third grade, many kids will be ready for a 16″ chair. If you're furnishing a classroom that spans these grades, consider keeping a mix of both sizes or exploring flexible seating options that adjust to different students.

Fourth – Sixth Grade

Kids experience another growth spurt as they transition from elementary to middle school. Classroom chairs with a 16″ seat height work for most fourth graders and some fifth graders.

By the time kids reach sixth grade, the majority will be comfortable using a standard 18″ chair. A few manufacturers offer a 17½″ chair which may be a better fit for petite students.

Seventh Grade & Beyond
