The Sharp Corporation was founded in 1912 in Tokyo. Its name is derived from the Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil, an early invention of company founder Tokuji Hayakawa. Sharp moved into the calculator space in the 1960s, developing the world's first transistor calculator in 1964 and the first integrated circuit calculator in 1966. The first LCD calculator was introduced by Sharp in 1973.
Today, this multinational corporation is headquartered in Osaka, Japan and employees more than 50,000 people worldwide. Sharp’s product family includes televisions, home appliances, ICs, solar cells, mobile phones, fax machines, electronic components, calculators and LCD panels.
