Looking for an efficient way to clean their Grand Rapids crockery shop, Melville and Anna Bissell patented their own manual floor sweeper in 1876. Customers soon began requesting their own sweepers, and the Bissells shifted the focus of their business. More than 140 years later, this family-owned company remains one of the largest manufacturers of vacuums and cleaning products in the world.
